Cozumel vs California – Some Simple Observations

Me: If we’re wearing flip flops, do we have to take them off?

TSA Agent: Yes.

Me: Doesn’t that seem a little unsanitary?

TSA Agent: (annoyed at the question & starts to walk away but mumbles) Wear socks next time.

Oh America, it was good to see you again!

Recently we took a trip back “home” to California. After being in Mexico for 7 months, I was very curious to see what our experience would be like.

Naturally, I was comparing everything to our life in Cozumel.

For brevity’s sake, here are a few key observations I made while in the U.S.:

  • There are so many “rules” – there’s a rule, regulation, law, or bi-law for practically everything
  • There generally seems to be a higher level of stress – everyone is a bit more agitated, especially when driving
  • People, while nice, seem a touch more self interested – perhaps less community minded is a better way to say it
  • It’s very commercial – it seems every city is based around the shopping center which includes a Target, Best Buy, and Costco. If it’s a higher income city, a Whole Foods. Lower income, Wal-Mart.

None of this is necessarily bad or good. Just some observations.

There was one observation I made that was almost overwhelming.

I could not get over the sheer amount of abundance and affluence I saw.

I felt as if I was viewing America with the same eyes that many of my own ancestors must have seen it when they first arrived so many years ago.

It occurred to me that anyone who has a good idea and a lot of hustle can totally crush it.

In fact, I’ll even say that anyone complaining of any so-called economic woes simply hasn’t awakened to the opportunity right in front of them.

America is still very much the land of opportunity.

But What About Mexico?

With all that said, Mexico has many of the same opportunities, if not more. A friend of mine who lives here once told me he feels that (at least here on the Yucatan Peninsula), it’s a lot like the Wild West.

I agree.

Plenty of land. Plenty of money. Less regulations. More of a feeling of adventure.

If you have the drive and the vision, you can make it big here.

It’s Not About Which Country You’re In

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter where you are in the world to make it big.

It’s about how much you’re willing to hustle. Are you willing to work hard? Are you willing to work smart?

If you’re concerned about making a better life for your family and others, there’s never been more opportunity – regardless of which country you find yourself in.

California vs Cozumel

We love California. It’s our home. It’s where our family and friends are.

It will be where we do the white picket fence thing someday.

For now, we love our choice to be in Cozumel.
